He was born on July 30th, 1947 in a small city called Thal. Thal has 2,000 inhabitants, and Arnold is the biggest star there: He even has a museum dedicated to him.
His father was a policeman working for the nazi party and his mother a 23 years old widow that already had a son. His father was discharged in 1941 after a malaria bout, four years before marrying his wife.
According to Arnold's own words, his parents were very strict. He declared that his parents were extremely severe when he didn't behave correctly and that physical punishment was a common method.
His father showed an obvious favoritism for his eldest son, Meinhard, who was only a year older than Arnold. He died in a car accident in 1971, when he was 25.
His father favoritism for Meinhard was so noticeable that he even used to think that Arnold was not his biological son, though he had no reasons to believe that at all.
Arnold once declared that he didn't attend to his father's funeral, but then he retracted and said that he said that because it was kinda cool (really). Gustav died in 1972, a year after Meinhard.
Arnold grew very close to her mother, Aurelia, who died of a heart attack in 1998 when she was visiting her husband's grave at Weisz Cemetery. She is buried with him.
Arnold began working out when he was 14. His mother want him to be a salesman and his father a policeman, but he decided to make a career out of weight lifting.
He actually became obsessed with training. He would break into the local gym late at night to lift some weights, because he said that it made him sick not to work out.
Arnold served a year in the Austrian army when he reach the legal age, because it was mandatory. He left without official permission to participate in Mr Europe contest and he was punished with a week in prison.
The first time Arnold competed in the Mr. Universe contest, he was defeated by his competitor Chester Yorton. The judges said that Yorton had better legs. Well, define better, please.
Arnold went back home and started a new training method, that gave him legs that looked like textbook legs. He returned to the contest and won his first Mr. Universe title.
The year was 1967 and after winning this title, Arnold Schwarzenegger became the youngest competitor ever who won Mr. Universe, with just twenty years old. But this was not the only record that Arnold broke.
When he was 23 he also became the youngest person to win the Mr. Olympia Contest. Not happy with that, he won the same title seven times in a row.
One time he won a competition of stone lifting in Munich, after lifting a 560 lb stone using only his legs. It seems like the leg workout paid out well.
When he was young, Arnold suffered from anxiety, stress and panic. He could overcome this after a good friend introduced him to transcendental meditation. He talk about this in later interviews and he still practices it.
In 1975 Arnold Schwarzenegger won his sixth Mr. Olympia title, beating Lou Ferrigno, who would later become known for his role as The Hulk in the television show that ran from 1978 to 1982.
Arnold didn't want to participate in this competition, but he was convinced by the producers of Pumping Iron, a documentary about the world of weight lifting and fisicoculturism. Luckily he agreed to compete.
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
He then told his english teacher that he wanted to become an actor, and not only an actor. He wanted to be (quote) "The greatest actor of all times". I'm sure his teacher believed.
Arnold admitted that he used steroids to build up his body. Technically there's nothing wrong with that, because steroids were legal back then. He call them "Tissue builders". Sure, Arnie.
THE FIRST FILM
Arnold's first film was "Hercules in New York". He still had a strong european accent, and that caused that the film had to be dubbed entirely in post production.
But his problem with the language didn't stop him, and probably it was the cause that made him play a deaf-mute hitman in his second film, The Last Goodbye, directed by Robert Altman in 1973.
HIS REAL VOICE
Stay Hungry was the first movie in which we can hear Arnold's actual voice. It was directed by Bob Rafelson in 1976, and where he acted along Jeff Bridges and Sally Field.
AGAINST ALL ODDS
No one but him believed that he got what it takes to be a movie star. They said that his body was to weird, that his accent was too strong and his name too long.
He solved the last problem for a while. In his first movie, Hercules in New York, he was called Arnold Strong. Maybe that's why he regrets having done that movie so much.
His first true hit was the movie Conan the Barbarian, premiered in 1982. He took this movie so seriously that he didn't cut his hair for three years to make his haircut look real.
For this movie he also had to train with swords and horses several hours a day for a few months. Being a guy used to do hard trainings, I'm sure he didn't suffer that much.
NOT QUITE SUCCESFUL
After the success of Conan the Barbarian they tried to do Conan the Destroyer. They did it, but no one saw it. The studio wanted to make a family movie and Arnold didn't agree: He was right.
This wasn't a problem for Arnold, because the same year he became super duper famous after starring The Terminator. An all time classic that was probably his most important role.
THE FIGURE OF THE DECADE
Remember what they used to say about him? You know what? This dude with weird body shape, strong austrian accent and an impossible to spell name was named The Figure of the Decade in 1993.
Arnold became a Republican after hearing american president Richard Nixon talking about freedom, war and taxes. He then realized that the Democrats were too similar to the people that ruled Austria in the 60s.
He got his first job in politics when he was hired as President of the Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He then began to tour the country to give speeches and inspirational events.
In 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he was running for Governor of California. It generated a big fuzz back then, and media from all over the world covered the news.
Against all odds, Arnold won the election by 1.6 million votes, and he became the second governor of the state of California who wasn't born in the United States of America.
As a Governor, he did a lot of things for the environment, becoming some kind of a signature subject to him. He even turned his personal Hummers into ecologic cars.
Arnold is known for his resilience. I mean, everyone thought that he would never become a movie star and he did. No one thought he would win the elections and he won. Two times.
I’LL BE BACK
He finished the two terms and the laws of California don't allow a third term, so he can't run again. He can't run for President either, since he is Austrian and not American.
Actually, in a publication made in 2010, he was named one of the worst governors in the United States, since he had some ethical… issues… when he was governor of California.
People of California didn't appreciate him that much either. He began his second term with 89% of good public image and end it with less than 23%, a true Terminator.
Arnie is more than a weird body and a strong accent. He is also a very successful businessman. He owns several companies, including a shopping mall, a sports festival and a film production company.
At 22, Arnold was already a millionaire. And he invested this money so well that he is now worth more than 400 million dollars. A few years ago he even bought an airplane for himself.
Arnold loves his Hummers. He loves them so much he was the first ever civilian to get one. In fact, he was the one that ask the AMG to make a legal street version of the vehicle and they did.
He met the journalist Maria Shriver (the nephew of president John Fitzgerald Kennedy) and got married in 1986 in a big celebration. They have four kids: Patrick, Katherine, Christina and Christopher.
The Schwarzenegger-Shriver are very devoted catholics. The whole family attend to mass every sunday in a church in Santa Monica, where they have a 1,022 sq. feet mansion in Brentwood.
In 2011, after nearly ten years of living together the difficult life of a politician and a politician's wife, Maria and Arnold got divorced, but they still have a good relationship.
Maria asked for the divorce after her lifelong maid confessed that her son Joseph, who was 14 at that time, was actually Arnold's son. And looking at this picture we can't deny that parenthood, right?
REAL LIFE HERO
In case you doubted about it, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a real life hero. In 2004 he saved a man from drowning in Hawaii. The man was cramping up in the water, and Arnie helped him get back to the shore.
Arnold Schwarzenegger became an US citizen in 1983 and since then he voted for every Republican candidate, except in the last elections, when he refused to vote for Donald Trump.
THE NEXT PRESIDENT
We said that he can't be president because he is not an american born. But he doesn't give up. He is waiting for a constitutional change that will allow him to run for office.
Arnold was always quite liberal with some stuff, and drugs is one of them. In an interview that he gave to a magazine he said that "Marijuana is just a leaf, not a drug".
